Torque bistability in the interaction between a neutron star magnetosphere and a thin accretion disc

چکیده
We present a time-dependent model of the interaction between a neutron star magnetosphere and a thin (Shakura-Sunyaev) accretion disk, where the extent of the magnetosphere is determined by balancing outward diffusion and inward advection of the stellar magnetic field at the inner edge of the disc. The nature of the equilibria available to the system is governed by the magnetic Prandtl number Pm and the ratio ξ of the corotation radius to the Alfvén radius. For ξ & Pm, the system can occupy one of two stable states where the torques are of opposite signs. If the star is spinning up initially, in the absence of extraneous perturbations, ξ decreases until the spin-up equilibrium vanishes, the star subsequently spins down, and the torque asymptotes to zero. Vortex-in-cell simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability suggest that the transport speed across the mixing layer between the disc and magnetosphere is less than the shear speed when the layer is thin, unlike in previous models.

Accretion disc–stellar magnetosphere interaction: field line inflation and the effect on the spin-down torque
We calculate the structure of a force–free magnetosphere which is assumed to corotate with a central star and which interacts with an embedded differentially rotating accretion disc. The magnetic and rotation axes are aligned and the stellar field is assumed to be a dipole. We concentrate on the case when the amount of field line twisting through the disc–magnetosphere interaction is large and ...
متن کاملInterface Modes and Their Instabilities in Accretion Disc Boundary Layers
We study global non-axisymmetric oscillation modes trapped near the inner boundary of an accretion disc. Observations indicate that some of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the luminosities of accreting compact objects (neutron stars, black holes and white dwarfs) are produced in the inner-most regions of accretion discs or boundary layers. Two simple models are considered in ...
متن کاملCan disk-magnetosphere interaction models and beat frequency models for quasi-periodic oscillation in accreting X-ray pulsars be reconciled?
Aims. In this paper we review some aspects of the theory of magnetic threaded disks. Methods. We discuss in particular the equations that determine the position of the inner disk boundary by using different prescriptions for the neutron star-accretion disk interaction. We apply the results to several accretion powered X-ray pulsars that showed both quasi-periodic oscillations in their X-ray flu...
متن کاملAccretion torque on magnetized neutron stars
The conventional picture of disk accretion onto magnetized neutron stars has been challenged by the spin changes observed in a few X-ray pulsars, and by theoretical results from numerical simulations of diskmagnetized star interactions. These indicate possible accretion during the propeller regime and the spin-down torque increasing with the accretion rate. Here we present a model for the accre...
متن کاملThe X - ray spectrum of the atoll source 4 U 1608 - 52
The transient atoll source 4U 1608–52 had been extensively observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE ) during its 1998 outburst. We analyse its X-ray spectra as a function of inferred accretion rate from both the 1998 outburst and from the non-outburst 1996 and 1998 data. We can fit all the spectra by a model in which seed photons from the neutron star surface are Comptonized in a bound...
